Getting rich while you sleep: Why you don’t need to wake up at 5 am

Getting rich is a dream shared by most Brazilians, and around here there’s a common mindset that only people who wake up early and grind hard every day ever become successful. The belief goes that only people who suffer through jobs they hate, waking up at dawn and working nonstop, will eventually achieve real success.

While this mindset is common, it’s not actually accurate. Waking up early has nothing to do with getting rich. In fact, even working hard doesn’t always guarantee it either (stick with us — we’ll explain).

If you’re working a job with no real growth potential, or if you’re not actively doing anything to change your current situation, there’s a good chance you’ll stay stuck in the same role, earning roughly the same salary for a long time — no matter how many days you wake up at 5 AM.

That’s exactly why entrepreneurship — building your own business — increasingly makes sense for so many Brazilians.

Of course, once you have your own business, you’ll probably want to wake up early to stay on top of things. But that alone won’t guarantee your success!

With that in mind, here are a few insights showing that waking up early isn’t always tied to productivity, earning money, or achieving success.

Productivity Has Nothing to Do With Waking Up Early

You’ve probably had days where nothing seemed to get done — where even simple tasks felt like they took forever, and you struggled to get through your to-do list.

The workday ends, and it feels like you accomplished almost nothing. Then you get home and suddenly feel energized, motivated to get things done — but your work hours are already over.

This is a classic example of someone who’s naturally more productive at night, but is forced into a conventional 9-to-5 schedule, struggling to stay productive during standard business hours.

If this sounds like you, forcing yourself into an early wake-up routine won’t help. The ideal productivity setup for you might actually be a non-traditional schedule — one where you work fewer hours but accomplish far more.

In other words, instead of clocking hours, you work based on output.

Once you run your own business, you’ll realize that output matters far more than time spent working (which is exactly why business owners tend to dislike holidays).

Respect Your Own Sleep Schedule

Everyone has a different ideal sleep schedule. Some people go to bed at 10 PM and wake up at 7 AM feeling energized and ready to work.

Others can only fall asleep around 2 or 3 AM and wake up around 10 AM (and if they wake up earlier, they’re likely not productive at all). It’s important to respect how your own body works — after all, what’s the point of waking up early if you’re exhausted the entire day?

So it might actually be better for you to wake up later and work later too, making the most of the hours when you’re naturally at your best. At the end of the day, getting rich is far more tied to productivity than to hours worked.

Getting Rich Requires Good Organization

Anyone hoping to start their own business and get rich needs solid planning and organization. This includes organizing your sleep and work schedule, as well as building a reliable team you can count on (no business runs well without good people).

This way, a business owner doesn’t necessarily need to be up at 5 AM managing everything themselves — not if they have someone else covering that time, someone whose natural sleep schedule differs from their own.

So while that other person is heading to bed, that’s exactly when the owner can start their own workday. This is how productive people often operate: different schedules working together, keeping production flowing constantly without unnecessary physical strain — everyone respecting their own peak productivity hours.

Never Underestimate the Power of Sleep

One of the biggest mistakes new entrepreneurs make is sacrificing sleep and rest time in order to keep working. But productivity is closely tied to rest and quality sleep.

So if you skip out on a good night’s sleep — regardless of how many hours you personally need or what time you usually go to bed — it’s very likely to hurt your performance the next day.

That’s why it’s so important to prioritize your sleep just as much as your productivity. Only then can you truly build wealth and do great work. Otherwise, your productivity — and your profits — will suffer.

When you prioritize output over hours worked, you gain in both the quality and quantity of what you produce, instead of just logging long hours without much to show for it. And if you want to get rich, this is exactly the mindset shift you need — one that lets you earn well without sacrificing quality sleep.
